Take Ten With Gathered Below

Short and to the point, our friends at Gathered Below give us some interesting answers about the fierce competition in the Brisbane music scene, their influences and what pushes them to write music.

What are you looking forward to most about this year?

Gathered Below: Just getting our name out there, trying to get as many shows as possible and playing with heaps more bands.

Why name your band Gathered Below?

Gathered Below: It’s referring to the position of our testicles.  But, really we don’t know the reason behind the name.  It was just a suggestion and we all liked it so we stuck with it.  When we think about it, the name can have various meanings, it’s something different to all of us.

How long have you been a band and where do you see yourselves in the next year or two?

Gathered Below: We’ve been around about 9 months, but we started playing shows in February this year.  I guess in the next year we would like to have a full length album recorded and play some shows out of Queensland, hopefully on tour.

Musical (or non musical) influences for the band?

Gathered Below: We all have musical backgrounds, so our influences come from heaps of places besides just music.  Our parents, our friends, life experiences, things like that.

What’s the scene like in Brisbane and surrounding areas? What are some good venues you would recommend to catch a local band/artist?

Gathered Below: It’s thriving heaps, but there are a lot of bands competing for shows and it makes it hard when venues left right and centre are getting shut down. We would recommend checking out Club 299 and Sun Distortion Studios.  They usually have the bigger bands in Brisbane playing shows there.

The state of Australian hardcore? Over-saturated or thriving?

Gathered Below: A bit of both really. There are heaps of talented bands out there doing awesome things for themselves and the scene, but, unfortunately because there are so many, it’s fucking hard to find the bands that stand out from the rest.

What band(s) would you love to tour with one day?

Gathered Below: We would love to tour with any band out there, any style, anywhere. If we could choose, we would tour with our mates The Last Outlaw, simply because they’re good friends of ours and have supported us from the start. But it’d be insane if we could ever tour with some of the bands that influenced us to start a band like I Killed The Prom Queen, Parkway Drive, Thy Art is Murder, etc.

What inspires you to write?

Gathered Below: The feeling when people mosh to your shit!  It’s great to write music, but even better when other people get to enjoy it.  That’s what gives us energy to keep doing what we do.

Favourite band(s)?

Gathered Below: Parkway Drive, The Red Shore, I Killed The Prom Queen, Enter Shikari, Lamb of God; there’s way too many to list. We love all types of music and heaps of bands, those are just our individual favourites.

What would your advice be for new bands just starting out?

Gathered Below: We are a fairly new band ourselves, but to a band just starting out, basically just have fun with what you do.  Practice lots and meet as many people as you can.

You can catch Gathered Below on June 24th with This City Ignites, As Silence Breaks, Draw First Blood and more at Greenslopes Bowls Club and on July 21st for the Mannequin Republic Anniversary Show at Club 299 (299 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley).
